Hybrid Page FAQ

What is Hybrid Solar + Grid mode?

Hybrid Solar + Grid mode combines solar power and grid electricity to provide uninterrupted heating and cooling. The heat pump automatically prioritizes solar energy when available and seamlessly supplements with grid power when solar production is insufficient.

When does a Hybrid Solar + Grid system make sense?

Hybrid mode is the most popular configuration because it offers the best balance between energy savings, comfort, and reliability. It is ideal for homes, cottages, commercial buildings… and any application requiring heating or cooling both day and night.

Do I need batteries or an inverter?

No. Our solar hybrid AC/DC heat pumps connect directly to solar panels and to a standard 240V AC supply. No batteries or inverter are required, reducing system cost and complexity while maximizing the value of your solar energy.

How many solar panels do I need in Hybrid Solar + Grid mode?

The recommended solar capacity depends on your location, solar exposure, and energy-saving goals. As a general recommendation, we suggest:

  • 12,000 BTU model: Minimum 900 W of solar panels
  • 18,000 BTU model: Minimum 1,300 W of solar panels

Adding more solar capacity will increase the amount of energy supplied by the sun and further reduce electricity consumption.

When designing your solar array, it is important to ensure that the total open-circuit voltage (Voc) of the panels does not exceed the heat pump's maximum input voltage of 380 VDC.

Because grid power is always available as a backup source, Hybrid mode generally requires less solar capacity than Solar-Only mode.

Which electrical protection equipment is required?

Proper electrical protection is strongly recommended to ensure a safe and reliable installation. Typical components include AC and DC disconnect switches, circuit breakers, fuses, and surge protection devices (SPD) to protect both the heat pump and the solar array from overcurrent and voltage surges.

Proper electrical protection, including DC surge protectors (SPD), circuit breakers, and an AC disconnect box, is required to activate and maintain the 5-year limited warranty.

Do you offer installation services?

We do not perform installations directly, but we work with a network of certified HVAC installers across North America. You can browse our Installer Locator page to find a partner near you or contact us for help to connect you with a qualified installer in your area.

Please note that installation by a certified HVAC technician is mandatory to qualify for the 5-year limited warranty.

What’s included when using the system design tool?

The system design tool automatically includes the core components required for your selected configuration, including the heat pump, outdoor unit mounting support, refrigerant line set, communication cable, solar panels, rail-less roof mounting hardware, solar cables, DC breaker and surge protection, an AC disconnect box, a whip kit, and an installation diagram to guide installers through the recommended setup and supplied components.
